Diver at Altar, First Cathedral, Lanai, Hawaii. Diving at First Cathedral is always an amazing experience. It is one of the premier dive sites on the Islands. Lava tubes created when the island was forming, the cavern is 25ft tall and over 100ft in length. The Cathedral gets its name for obvious reasons, at the right time of year and day the interactions between light, shadows, and water can be a truly moving experience.
The entrance to the cathedral appears to be a small dark fissure in the side of coral encrusted wall at 60ft. As you venture deeper into the fissure you leave the turquoise blue sunlight waters behind. As your eyes adjust to the darkness you begin to see light streaming into the opposite end of the cavern, noticing for the first time the expansive brilliance of the cathedral. On the day Diver at Alter was captured the light from the window struck the altar in perfect unison with the diver taking in the amazing scene. I positioned myself in the shadowy entrance of the cathedral so as not to disturb the divers reverie. The image was taken with only natural light to capture the moments inherent beauty.
